Training Course on Personal Status and Inheritance
Targeting Palestinian family lawyers in Israel, the course is designed to provide capacity building and enhance legal skills in cases of personal status and inheritance both in theory and in practice.
In his opening statement, Dr. Jamil Salem, IoL Director, welcomed Dr. Nayfah as Sarsi, Director of the Nisaa wa Afaq (Women and Horizons) Organisation. According to Dr. Salem, the training event was a proof positive of the unity among Palestinians no matter where they were. “The training is a component of activities and programmes the IoL is implementing in relation to family laws and family court system.” In this context, Dr. Salem provided an overview of the many activities and programmes initiated by the IoL in partnership with Palestinian civil society organisations in the 1948 territory, particularly with the Nisaa wa Afaq (Women and Horizons) Organisation.
Dr. Salem made a briefing note about IoL’s establishment, goals, and activities. This training exercise is part and parcel of IoL’s informed initiatives. In partnership with the Nisaa wa Afaq (Women and Horizons) Organisation, the IoL is working towards developing this training exercise into a Diploma Programme in Family Lawyering. The programme will provide training and rehabilitation to family lawyers in the 1948 territory to take examinations scheduled for practicing the legal profession before family courts. Dr. Salem thanked the audience, who insisted to attend the training event despite difficulties they had encountered. He expressed his hope that the training achieve assigned goals and maximum benefit, both theoretically and practically.
Ms. Reem al Butmah, legal researcher at the IoL, made a presentation on the training objectives, topics, and timeframe of implementation. Ms. Al Butmah showed confidence that the training would achieve maximum benefit.
Launched on 6 December 2014, the training course is scheduled to last for 15 weeks. Totalling 87 training hours, an average of six training hours will be provided every week. Some training days might be delivered within the 1948 territory. The training course will cover key personal status matters, inheritance, and judicial applications of relevant cases before family courts. At the end of the training course, a trainee will receive a certificate signed by both the IoL and the Nisaa wa Afaq (Women and Horizons) Organisation. Certificates demonstrated that trainees have successfully completed all training requirements in line with the applicable evaluation system.
