Legal Encounter between Law Students at Birzeit University and Arab Law Students Forum
the IoL organised a legal encounter that covered several topics, including international law and development of the legal framework and legal education in Palestine. In the context of promoting outreach and cooperation with Arab students inside the Green Line, the legal encounter was a product of collaboration between BZU law students and Arab Law Students Forum.
Arab students made a tour around the BZU campus and visited BZU museum. The IoL management and BZU law students welcomed Arab students and highly appreciated their significant visit, emphasising unity of the Palestinian people wherever they are.
Marking positive interaction among students, the encounter included several events and lectures. Coordinator of the Right to Education Campaign Ahmed Shuweiki made a presentation on the campaign. A film on the Right to Education Campaign was then screened. Ms. Reem Botmeh and Mr. Ata Hindi, IoL researchers, delivered a lecture on International Law inside the Green Line and on Development of the Legal Framework and Legal Education in Palestine. An interactive panel discussion addressed concepts of international law, including the right to self-determination, ethnic cleansing, forced displacement, as well as other international law themes of relevance to the question of Palestine. Mr. Ammar Jamous, IoL researcher, made a presentation on the Palestinian Legal and Judicial System (AL-MUQTAFI).
Mr. Rabee’ Ighbariyyeh, Coordinator of the Arab Law Students Forum, commended BZU for the warm welcome and hospitality. He said that the visit would be a prelude to more extensive initiatives and cooperation between the Forum and Palestinian universities. The Forum was established at the initiative of a group of Palestinian students inside the Green Line. It is an independent forum of Arab law students at the Tel Aviv University. The first activity the Forum was this visit to the IoL, including a legal encounter between law students inside the Green Line and at BZU. Mr. Ighbariyyeh asserted that the encounter was so productive and hoped that the visit would a “start of a Palestinian-Palestinian outreach project”. The message of this project would be: “We will not accept partition imposed by the occupation. We will break these barriers and restrictions!”
Topics were of great interest to both law students inside the Green Line and law students at the BZU. Law students inside the Green Line indicated they were happy with lectures, which addressed topics usually avoided at Israeli universities. They also expressed their willingness to future cooperation with BZU law students through joint events, projects, and research initiatives.
